This was a period of gradual revival as LUCS and other Societies promoted the recreational potential of the canal. During this period the construction of an aqueduct over the Edinburgh city by-pass, which opened in 1987, helped assure the future of the Union Canal and led to the Millennium Link project which restored navigation from end to end and rejoined the Union Canal to the Forth and Clyde Canal.
