The Union Canal in use and its decline, which started in 1922 with the closure of the Edinburgh basins, and culminated in 1933 with the closure of its junction with the Forth and Clyde canal at Port Downie and subsequent infilling of the locks between the two canals. The Union Canal was formally closed to navigation in 1965.
